I have been disheartened by the church since was a teenager when I saw how women, children, or anyone who was different and did not follow whatever invisible line was drawn in the sand that the church elders believed at the moment whether it was in the Bible or not believed hurt my heart. They were abusive, cruel, and mean to each other. When I was 13 years old and moved in with the family I call my family now after my moms untimely death I experienced the awful truth that the church elders can get away with abuse and still be held up as the perfect son of man and can do no wrong. This man, followed me into the women’s bathroom at the church and tried to assault me. Because of my previous experiences I knew what he was thinking and how to act. I locked the door and stayed there until I heard him leave and felt safe enough to get out into a group of people. One of my sisters saw the look on my face and questioned me about it, I told her nothing because I knew then that I would be the one to blame and I just entered the family. I am not mad at God/Jesus. It is not his fault. It is the men who misinterpret what the Bible says and uses it as a weapon instead of what it is meant for. It is meant for spiritual guidance and to show you that all things are possible and God/Jesus is there. In Bob Smietana’s book Reorganized Religion, his discusses how they church is changing, especially among women. He shares about Beth Moore and how to stood up to Trump and the church and the abuses of women and how they are treating her now. I have high respects for her. Like her, it boggles my mind how women are supporting these men who are abusing them and other women in the church. This angers me, and it makes me want to take action. Though, I don’t know what kind of action I want to take. Smietana does a great job researching and sharing stories of courageous people who are fighting back and standing up and trying to change how the church is treating people. If you are disillusioned about the church this book may give you some hope like it did me.
