I have been fascinated by the Salem Witch Trials back in the 1600’s. Many of the women and men who were put on trial and murdered were accused because they used herbs to heal people of ailments or because the men wanted their land or the women were jealous or weirded out by the eccentric older women who lived without husbands. Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian is a well-researched account of Mary Deerfield who was accused because she wanted a divorce from her husband who abused her and she also used herbs and spices to heal people. She was set to hang but she escaped. I do no know if this is a true story, but I liked that the lady escaped to Jamaica and lived well afterwards. It saddens me that the witch trials were real that so many women and men were hung and murdered just because people were afraid and could not let people be themselves or allow someone to be different than them. So many people lied about their neighbors and gotten away with it.
