I love trees. I have always felt a deep sense of connection to them. I appreciate everything that they have given us: oxygen, beautiful furniture, warmth, wonderful essential oils, and coverage from the elements. When Literati club said our November selection was a book about trees, I got excited. Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard was worth the excitement I felt. From the first sentence I knew she and I were kindred spirits. I love the scientific knowledge and her sense of wonder and knowing about the trees and the community nature of them. This was something I never thought about or knew. This fascinated me when I started reading all about how the trees connected with their roots to everything. It is a network under there. Before you think she is a tree hugger, she is not. Her family had a lumber mill business and she worked as a forester for one of the lumber mills. She has a deep respect for them while we are using them for our benefits. I agree with how she views using trees and nature. We have to respect it and be thankful when we are using anything in nature. I read this along with a fiction novel while I was recovering from my surgery on November 19th. While in the hospital my doctor came in and saw what I was reading. I think it surprised me. It was something he was interested in too. We had a good 30-minute discussion about this book. I will be gifting him this book when I see him in three weeks for a follow up. I love sharing my books with people, especially when they show an interest in them.
