This year one of the diagnosis that I received is PTSD. I have had a traumatic childhood and of course, my medical journey is traumatic. I am in counseling that is helping me with tools to learn to maneuver well with my PTSD/Trauma responses. In Kati Morton’s new book Traumatized: Identify, Understand, and Cope with PTSD and Emotional stress I gained a lot of helpful information. I love that she puts in the second chapter what the Diagnostic Stand Manual definition of these are. It is one thing to be told by your therapist and another to see the words written on the page. It gives me a deeper understanding. What I appreciate about Morton’s book is that she is a therapist and has gained insight from her own practice in how to guide individuals through the painful process.
I am now more aware what my triggers are when it comes to my past and to my medical journey and this helps me to work through them so I can still move forward in my life and not be stuck in the same old situations. That there is what healing is supposed to be about. Healing doesn’t mean cure, but it means not allowing it to stop you from living life to the fullest and to love others while living life.
