Set during the end of the civil war where many blacks were freed from slavery and the reconstruction of the south started happening. This story is between a white man and two black brothers. This is a sad novel, so prepare to cry. I know I did.

I thought about black and white racial relationships and the fear that keeps people stuck in beliefs about people of color and how slavery happens and how many abuses happened. It makes me sad. I do not claim to have the answers to the many issues. I do not know how others feel or what their mindsets are. I oversee my own mindset towards other people no matter their color, sex, religious or sexual orientation. I have no right to tell others how to live. I have no power over how others view things. I cannot help but wonder if people were more open to discovering how the beliefs about others was formed and why they are feared or why they fear others that kindness might be possible.

Harris is a great author. I can tell he is a young writer and I look forward to seeing what other books he choses to write.

I purchases this book because I saw Oprah recommended it. The opinions I express are my own and I was not influenced.
