I love reading memoirs from strong individuals who not only accept their disability or challenges, but also create beautiful lives and not play the victim. I just finished reading Kevin Atlas memoir Get In The Game, this one handed, 7 foot giant is a basketball player. He shares how he got started and worked through the obstacles and the encouragement he received from a coach who cared.
Although Atlas’ book is geared towards sports I still felt encouraged reading it. There are several places where he encourages readers to accept their “nub”, he has one arm and there is only a nub. He learned to find the advantages having just having a nub and how strong he is with it. I love this. He encourages us all to find our “nub” and learn the strength we have because of it and the blessings and the beauty. We all have a “nub” he says. I agree. I also appreciate that he shares how excuses don’t serve us. I have to admit that I have made excuses and this has given me a different way of looking at what they are actually doing.
This book has a lot of great tips on how to set goals, focus, changing mindsets, and accepting who God created us to be “nubs” and all. The writing is simple, plan, but has a lot of heart and soul. I believe those of us who have disabilities whether a sports player or not would find value and great encouragement in reading Kevin Atlas’ book.
