Lately, I have been thinking and learning about women who have suffered religious percussion and political percussion just because they were a woman. A couple of months ago a wonderful woman came through my front door and became my new caregiver. She is from Kerkistan. I have never heard of this country. However, I was fascinated to learn about her suffering. How her family suffered simply because they were Christian and a woman. Her mother was even stabbed, thankfully she is alive and living well in the USA. So when I was given an opportunity to read a book about a young woman’s journey who lived in Sudan back in the early 90’s when a group of people terrorized different villages I knew I wanted to read it. I’m glad that I did.
Rebecca Deng is a type of friend I would like to have. She is brave, courageous, thoughtful, and enjoys good food and Jesus, a woman after my own heart. The way she described her village and the food she ate in Sudan made my mouth water. I was enthralled. I am a woman who loves to try different foods and recipes from different cultures. I believe food units us in the human race. We all eat. We all enjoy the smell, the color, and the taste of food. When I meet someone I will ask them about the food that they eat. I enjoy seeing peoples faces light up when I ask them about their food and how it is a family tradition. This is a great way to get to know someone.
Another aspect of Rebecca’s story that I connected with is the way she appreciates the smell of the rain. I thought I was the only one. I often get weird looks from people when I saw I love the smell of rain after it has been dry. It is fresh. It soothes my soul.
The best part of Rebecca story, in my opinion is her willingness to forgive those who have hurt her, even in her own family. She has used this forgiveness to help other refugees.
This is a wonderful testimony and I believe everyone should read it, whether a man or woman, young or old, everyone would benefit from knowing this story.
