I use a wheelchair, an electric one and a manual. I use it because I have subglottic stenosis and it affects my ability to breathe. I cannot walk long distances because of this. I was excited when I was offered a chance to read “We Carry Kevan” by Kevan Chandler. I am impressed with the memoir of Kevan Chandler and his friends as they trek through Europe with Kevan in a backpack carried by his friends. He lives in a wheelchair and his friends with kindness and excitement with Kevan in the backpack took him on a great adventure in other countries.
I felt a connection in one part of the book especially, when Kevan went to a church and a woman was persistent in wanting to pray for healing over Kevan. I knew exactly how Kevan felt in this awkward situation. I have one neighbor who consistently and with demanding presence wants me to go to a healing prayer service. It isn’t that I don’t believe in God’s power to heal me, or that prayer is a sham and it doesn’t work. It is the fact that God and I have talked and he told me no. That my body won’t be healed. I have to learn to live well and rely on him. I understand Kevan shame, guilt, and agitation in having overbearing faith healers badger you. Because when you don’t receive a healing to the way they think you should be healed or how then they think you don’t have enough faith or that you haven’t confessed all your sins to God. That don’t remember in the Gospels that Jesus on several occasions said that people’s ailments are not a punishment for a sin they committed. I feel you Kevan…
Anyone, who loves adventure stories and rooting for people will love this memoir. It is an inspiration and powerful story of friendship and one young man whose dream came true.
