Beauty, what is it? How do you define beauty? For me, I haven’t been able to see myself as beautiful but I do know what makes me go oh that is so beautiful. In Rebecca Friedlander’s book “Finding Beautiful: Discovering Authentic Beauty Around the World” she takes you with her on her journey around the world meeting authentic women who all have a story of pain, loss, and trauma and who have ultimately moved through the pain and allowed God to shine through them into their own beauty. I love the photographs, the stories and the different perspectives of how they traveled and found there own authentic beautiful stories.
For me, finding my own beauty is a struggle. I live with a trach tube that makes me sound more like Darth Vader than myself. I spit like a llama. And I have to wear an ugly blue collar in order to keep my trach tube in place. Not exactly beautiful. Maybe beauty is more than looks, but it it is a deep knowing of the pain, endurance, perserverance, and stories from the inside that we all can share. Like I said above Friedlander gave me a lot to consider and think about in Finding Beautiful.
I believe this book would be a great gift for any young women, heck, any age of woman who struggles with their authentic beauty. Let’s encourage each other and see the beauty in all of us.
