I love reading stories where two different cultures meet and build a friendship. In Once We Were Strangers by Shawn Smucker this is the exact story you get. Shawn becomes friends with a muslim who came from Syria. Smucker is honest and real in this book about how uncomfortable he was in building friendships and letting someone into his world. I’m a lot like Smucker in that I am closed off and standoffish when I first meet someone. It takes me a bit to allow someone into my life and feel safe enough to accept their friendship. Muhammad is open and friendly and giving of his time and gestures of friendship. I think as Americans we can be standoffish and worry about someone’s intentions when they make gestures of friendship to us. This book will give you a whole new perspective of creating friendships with others who have a different culture and religion than you.
