I have enjoyed a few of Eugene Peterson’s book, including The Message Bible that he put out, so I was excited to get to read his wife’s book Becoming Gertrude. I was not disappointed. I love the concept of cultivating spiritual friends that is used over and over inside her lovely book. I long for and believe I have a few spiritual friends in my life. I am grateful for them. I sense Mrs. Peterson is grateful for hers too.
I love that Mrs. Peterson shares so much of her own authentic soul in this book, including her challenges. I’m not going to give too much away, because I want you to read them for yourself. All I can say is it edified my soul. It also made me thankful for the friends that I have. It made me thankful for the way I was raised by all the different parts of my multi-cultural family. It also caused me to be thankful to God for the eyes that I have to view his beautiful people and community.
As chronically sick, it is easy to see the world and the people in it as uncaring and uncompassionate. Is that true? I don’t think it is true that all communities and people are uncaring and uncompassionate. I believe there are some who are, don’t get me wrong. I just think focusing on them only can screw up our view of ourselves, God, and community. I know I am guilty of letting that cloud my view. How about you?
