Reading fiction allows me to live in a different world, to see things in a new way. Fiction doesn’t tell you what you need to do or how to fix it either. I read a lot of non-fiction books and devotions, so every once in awhile I like to dive into a novel and get lost in the story without thinking too much.
In Amy K. Sorrells novel Before I Saw You I got a chance to get lost in the story world of Jaycee. She is a character that I can identify with. Her mother is a mess, her baby brother passes away, she just broke off a relationship with a boyfriend who was emotionally and physically abusive and she is pregnant. Can you just imagine that pain this young lady is going through? Somehow, in the story God helps her through. I cried, I laughed, I saw Amen, and mostly my heart went out for Jaycee.
What I love about Sorrells novel is her descriptions of the places and the people. I could clearly see them. I felt the trees and I saw the animals. I also felt the anquish, shame, guilt, and love that Jaycee felt and had. This is a great novel and I recommend it to anyone.
