Time sure is passing by fast. My journey to rebuilding has taken me on a many step process of going towards weight loss surgery. Last Thursday I saw the nutritionist for the first time. For the next four months I will be going to a once a month nutritional class and even possible going through diabetes education again. While at the nutritionist we talked about the eating plan for the bariatric surgery I will be getting done. It is fairly simple. Eat protein, then next is vegetables, and then I’m to include fruits. I’m also to eat 3 meals a day (I currently have a hard time with this, because sleep is a priority due to not getting enough because of my trach tube). Mindfully eat all meals and snacks (I do this). Eat slowly, chew foods well. Meals should be consumed in 15 to 20 minutes (I do this already because of the trach tube. If I eat fast I choke.) Drink 1 protein drink per day to replace a meal and or a snack, as needed. The protein drink should have 20 to 30 mg’s of protein (I don’t do this) Sip at least 48 to 64 oz of water daily (I do this).
While at the nutritionist I had to choose 3 goals. A diet/reduction goal, behavior goal, and an exercise goal. The diet/reduction goal is following the pre-operative eating plan. The behavioral goal is consistent meal timing, meaning eat 3 meals a day. My exercise goal is exploring exercise DVD’s and use them 3 times a week.
Meal timing I am struggling with. For the last couple of days I have been getting up at 6AM and going to bed early. The hard part is waking up between 3 to 5 times in a night coughing and having to suction. Afterwards, I stay awake for awhile. It is frustrating to me. I use to be an early to bed and early to rise kind of gal. I miss my schedule. The reason I’m choosing to get up early and going to bed early is because of having to consume 3 meals a day and to be awake while my caregiver is here. I am hoping it will get easier. I will not take a sleeping pill because with the sleeping pill I can sleep for an entire day and still not be rested. I hate feeling groughly and exhausted all the time with the sleeping pill.
The protein drink, I haven’t purchased any yet. However, I did go exploring at Walmart for a good protein drink. Man they are expensive and man there are a lot to choose from. I’m hoping at the beginning of May I can find someone to take me to Costco to purchase Premiere Protein. I hear that Costco has a good price on them.
Exercise, I have been exploring the Libraries catalogue of exercise DVD’s. I have found several that I can do. My favorite so far is Peggy Cappy Easy Yoga series. Last week I did Easy Yoga for Diabetes and this week I will be doing Easy Yoga for Arthritis. I love that I can sit in my wheelchair to do the poses. She shows for all the different levels. I hope to someday graduate to the next level. My cat is more flexible than I am. I am sometime envious of all the poses he can do. I love him though.
Until next time, be well…
