Everyone wants to know What Are Ketones?
I was inspired to write this article because my friend Karen from Wellness Works NW has started selling Prüvit Ketone Supplements. I wanted to know more about it. I also know that Karen is dedicated to the safety and health of her clients, especially those of us who are chronically ill. As a diabetic, at one time, I was warned about getting Diabetic Ketoacidosis which is a deadly complication of a diabetic who is producing too many ketones in their body. So I was a bit apprehensive about following a Ketogenic Diet or taking a supplement that would promote ketoacidosis. I am sure many people have that same fear.
I am here to squash that fear. I believe that a ketogenic diet and the supplements would be safe for anyone who is diabetic or who has a Chronic Illness. The key to being safe is knowings the safe zones for ketones and to monitor your levels like you would your blood sugars.
There are three different types of ketones in our bodies.
- Acetoacetate
- Beta-hydroxybutyrate
- Acetone
Ketones are a fatty acid that our body breaks down in our liver into these three ketones so that we can use them up as energy when there are no carbohydrates in our body to be used for energy. This process turns fat into carbohydrates so that we can have the energy we need to run our bodies. The byproduct is often times acetone which makes our breath stink and causes us to get gassy. It is a fascinating process and you can learn more in The Ketogenic Bible. This is an excellent book that describes the scientific process in more detail than I ever could.
It is important to keep track of your ketone levels when you are doing the ketogenic diet plan and or using supplements, especially those of us with a chronic condition. There are three tests, a breathalyzer, blood, and urine. The best tester is the blood. It looks a lot like the diabetic blood test monitor that I use to check my blood sugars.

Here is the results you want to watch for:
- Normal: 0 to 0.4 MMOL that will have your blood sugars be at 80 to 120
- The Ketogenic amount: 0.5 to 7 MMOL blood sugars will be between 60 to 120
- Dangerous: 15 to 25 MMOL blood sugars 200 to 500. This level is fatal, get to the ER immediatly.
Eating a keto diet can be safe as long as you monitor your ketosis and blood sugar levels and know what to watch for. A Keto Diet consists of eating little carbohdyrates, especially refined flours and sugars. The carbs you do eat are from fruit or vegetables. Isn’t that the way we should be eating anyway? I am aiming to eat this way for my blood sugars and I have discovered that the weight loss surgery diet is basically the same as a keto diet. Mainly eating protein and fats and little carbs.
